Somebody in the away end at the Anoeta on Thursday night held up a flag that read "From -17 to Europe". Bournemouth beat Real Sociedad 2-1 in their first European match in 127 years of existence, and the four words on that flag did more work than any match report could.
Eighteen years ago the club went into administration, took a 10-point deduction and were relegated to League Two. To stay in the Football League at all for 2008-09 they had to accept a further 17-point penalty and agree not to appeal, having failed to exit administration on the terms required. That is the starting position. Thursday's ending had Alex Scott, a midfielder valued at around £100m, picking out a Brazilian winger with a £130m release clause to head the winner in San Sebastian.
Forty-five minutes of the real thing
Marco Rose's side did not turn up to survive. For the whole first half they pressed Sociedad off their own pitch, won the ball back high again and again and created chances even when the home defence had time to set itself. This against a team led by Mikel Oyarzabal, a World Cup winner, who beat Atletico Madrid to lift the Copa del Rey last season.
"It's a brilliant win in our first European game," Rose told TNT Sports. "It's brilliant for the club and the 2,000 fans from Bournemouth."
The second half was a different experience, and Rose said so. "It was very intense and tough. Brilliant first half in everything, the way we won balls and the possession high up. In the second half, we needed to suffer because we were not so sharp."
Sociedad have an edge to them and they found it after the break. Bournemouth are not famous for holding leads. They had surrendered one in each of their first four Premier League games this season. Djordje Petrovic kept them in it with a couple of sharp saves and they got over the line.
Adam Smith's night
The captain's armband belonged to a man who was there for the start of the climb. Adam Smith arrived on loan during the 2010-11 season, signed permanently in 2014 and is closing in on 400 league appearances for the club. Eddie Howe, appointed in January 2009 with the 17-point deduction already applied, took that side to safety by nine points and had them in the Premier League six and a half years later.
Smith also collected a record on the night. At 35 years and 141 days he became the oldest English outfield player to make a debut in major European competition since Reginald Pickett of Ipswich in 1962.
"Adam has been with the club for so long, dedicated himself to the club, and it's such a proud moment, not only for him, but for his family, his team-mates and old team-mates to see how he's grown," former Cherries full-back Charlie Daniels said on BBC Radio Solent. "To lead out the Cherries on this historical night is fantastic."
The price of doing well
None of this comes without a bill. Bournemouth have spent the last few years watching good players and good managers get picked off, and qualifying for Europe was not enough to keep Andoni Iraola, who left for Liverpool in the summer and brings them to the Vitality on Sunday. Scott and Rayan will both attract serious money. The club will hold out for every penny of that £130m clause on the Brazilian.
Supporters who spent 2008 wondering whether the club would exist in 2009 are unlikely to complain about that particular problem.
