James Trafford has taken a significant step towards making his Leeds United move permanent after completing his medical on Thursday morning. The 23-year-old goalkeeper arrived at Leeds' training ground ahead of a deal understood to be worth at least £40 million, with a series of performance-related add-ons that could push the total figure considerably higher.

If confirmed, the transfer will break Leeds United's record for a single signing — a statement of the club's renewed ambitions since returning to the Premier League.

A Keeper Built for the Top Level

Trafford spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Burnley, where he impressed despite the club's eventual relegation. His performances that year nonetheless marked him out as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in English football, and he featured for the England national team during the 2026 World Cup as part of their squad.

Standing at 6ft 6in, Trafford offers imposing aerial presence, sharp shot-stopping instincts, and — for a player who has only just turned 23 — a composure that belies his relative inexperience at the top level. He spent a number of years in Manchester City's academy system absorbing their style of play, an education that should serve him well at a Leeds side that likes to press high and build from the back.

A Statement Signing for Leeds

For Leeds, this represents a clear signal of intent. A club-record fee for a goalkeeper is not a decision taken lightly, and the willingness to spend at this level says everything about where director of football Victor Orta and manager see the club heading.

Leeds finished last season in consolidation mode following promotion, but this summer's activity in the transfer market suggests they are not content to simply survive in the Premier League. Trafford's arrival gives them a reliable number one for years to come.

Manchester City's Succession Plan

For Manchester City, the sale generates valuable funds and clears a development pathway bottleneck. Trafford had limited room to break into the first team ahead of Ederson, and the permanent transfer to Leeds gives both parties exactly what they need.

An official announcement is expected imminently. Trafford, if all goes to plan, could be involved in Leeds' pre-season preparations before their Premier League campaign begins in mid-August.
