Patrick Vieira was born in Dakar, won a World Cup with France, and has now come back to coach the country of his birth. He does not seem to think that is a contradiction.
"Being head coach of the Senegal national team is an absolute dream," the 50-year-old said at his unveiling on Friday. "I was born here, my parents were born here, and it really is a homecoming."
He called the decision "one from the heart" and said he accepted the job in his first meeting with the federation president, partly because of what he found in the squad: "There was also an exceptional generation of players."
What he inherits
Vieira replaces Pape Thiaw, who was dismissed after Senegal's World Cup exit in the last 32. That night still stings. The Teranga Lions led Belgium 2-0 with five minutes left and lost 3-2 in extra time.
Before that came the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, won 1-0 against Morocco after extra time in January. The trophy's ownership is now with the Court of Arbitration for Sport after some Senegal players and staff walked off in protest at a penalty decision in the final, and the cup was handed to the hosts in March.
"Today, Senegal is among the major nations in world football," Vieira said. "Senegal's objectives aren't what they were 10 or 15 years ago. The demand for results has also stepped up. We need to lay solid foundations."
He wants a team with "a very precise structure" that plays with "intensity and aggression", and he was careful to say he is not tearing anything down. "It's about keeping this team's strength: its identity, its unity, its ability to suffer together."
Two away trips and a thin squad to start
There is no honeymoon. Vieira goes straight into 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying with two games this window, two more in November and the final two rounds in March 2027.
The opener was meant to be at home to Mozambique on 25 September but has been reversed because Dakar is hosting the 2026 Youth Olympic Games. "Of course, I'd have preferred to play the first match here in Dakar," he said. "Those are difficulties we're going to accept and deal with."
Senegal then travel to Ethiopia on 29 September.
Edouard Mendy, 34, has retired from international football. Sadio Mane misses out with what Vieira described as "a bit of a physical issue", though the coach expects him back. Krepin Diatta is left out because he has no club, and Ismaila Sarr is absent after a groin injury and a summer of transfer noise at Crystal Palace.
A manager with something to prove
Vieira's playing career was decorated. His coaching career has not been. He left Crystal Palace in March 2023 with 22 wins from 74 games, spent a season at Strasbourg, then was sacked by Genoa in November 2025 with the club bottom of Serie A.
"I'm a better coach today than I was in my last spell at Genoa, because that experience helped me grow," he said. "Given the experience I have as a manager, I've got no doubt about my ability to meet the expectations of fans."
Those fans met him at the airport on Thursday evening, flag in hand, and he noticed. "Taking charge of this national team isn't just a new stage in my career. It's coming back home."
