It was the kind of night that will produce two very different sets of headlines — one about the resilience, one about how the lead disappeared in the first place.
A comfortable hour
Madrid went ahead on 25 minutes through an own goal from Elche goalkeeper Matias Dituro. Kylian Mbappe added the second on 33, finishing from close range, and at that stage the game looked finished. Mbappe's scoring run in La Liga this season has been relentless and he barely had to break stride for this one.
Then Elche remembered they were at home. Abiel Osorio headed one back on 71 minutes and the atmosphere shifted. Fer Nino levelled it on 83. For seven minutes, Madrid were staring at two dropped points against a side nobody expects them to slip against.
Espi settles it
The winner came from a move involving Madrid's substitutes and senior men together. Espi combined with Jude Bellingham and Mbappe before slotting home in the 91st minute. The bench emptied. Mourinho, not a man who hides his feelings at moments like that, got his reaction in early.
Fifteen points from a possible 18 is a serious start for a manager in his first season back at the Bernabeu, and the timing of the goal matters as much as the three points. Dropping two here would have left Madrid chasing Barcelona rather than sitting alongside them.
What it says about this Madrid side
The defensive collapse between the 71st and 83rd minutes is the part Mourinho will work on. Two goals conceded from open play in 12 minutes, at a ground where Madrid had controlled almost everything, is not a one-off pattern you ignore.
The counter-argument is the one his players made on the pitch: they went and won it anyway, with a young substitute combining with two of the biggest names in the squad to do it. Barcelona, level on points, will have watched the last ten minutes with mixed feelings.
