Alvaro Arbeloa needed something to go right. He got it from the bench. Oscar Bobb came on at the London Stadium with Fulham and West Ham level at 2-2, and inside ten minutes he had jinked through the home defence and tucked the ball inside the near post for his first goal since joining the club.
Fulham won 3-2 and are in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. More to the point for Arbeloa, they have finally won something after a winless start to the Premier League season.
Four goals before half-time
The game did not take long to open up. Rodrigo Muniz headed Fulham in front on 13 minutes. Morato equalised almost immediately for West Ham. Cesar Palacios rolled Fulham back ahead on 37, and Pablo squeezed in a leveller in first-half stoppage time. Two-all at the break, and neither defence looked like it wanted the responsibility.
The second half was tighter until Arbeloa turned to his substitutes. Bobb was the one chasing the winner and he found it on 78 minutes, beating his man on the run before finishing from a tight angle.
What the goal means for Bobb
The Norway winger's move had been waiting for a moment like this. A player of his type is judged on end product, and until Tuesday night he had produced plenty of the approach work without the finish. A solo goal to win a London derby is a decent way to break the duck.
He also gives Arbeloa a genuine option from the bench in games that are stuck, which Fulham have had a few of already this season.
West Ham's problem is not going away
For the hosts, this was another night of conceding three in a game they twice got back into. West Ham scored two goals at home and still lost, which points at the same defensive issues that have followed them through the opening weeks.
Fulham's league form remains the real test. Manchester United visit Craven Cottage on Sunday afternoon. A cup win over a local rival does not fix a Premier League start, but Arbeloa will take the feeling it leaves in the dressing room.
