Arsenal had not lost a Premier League game all season. They had won seven in a row in all competitions and nine straight league matches going back to April. Then they went to the Amex on Saturday and were taken apart by Brighton, 3-0, in front of a crowd that could not quite believe what it was watching.
Mikel Arteta did not hide behind anything afterwards. He said Brighton deserved it. He said his players were "very far" from the standards he sets, and he used a phrase that will follow this result around for a while: a big lesson.
Arsenal lost the fight before they lost the game
Arteta has built his Arsenal on winning duels. Since 2019 he has talked about physicality more than almost any other part of the job. On Saturday his team lost nearly every 50-50 that mattered.
"There are a lot of moments when the ball is 50-50 and it changes hands and most of the time it was for them," he said. He also pointed to technical mistakes that ripped his defence open in ways Arsenal supporters are not used to seeing. Last season the Gunners conceded fewer goals than anyone in the division. David Raya had been beaten once in four league games before this.
Two down at half-time, Arsenal were already in trouble. They have not come from a goal behind at the break to win a league match since a trip to Bolton in March 2008.
Shearer: they absolutely battered Arsenal
Brighton are the division's top scorers with 16 goals, eight of them in the last week alone. Fabian Hurzeler's side went third with this win and could have had more.
Alan Shearer, on BBC Radio 5 Live, did not bother with hedging. "They absolutely battered Arsenal," he said. "From start to finish today Brighton were magnificent, every single one of them played their part. It should have been six or seven goals." He gave Hurzeler credit for the organisation behind the pressing, noting Brighton chased as a unit rather than in ones and twos.
Curtis Davies, also on 5 Live, was gentler on the champions and called it a blip. "Their form this season has so far been good, this has been a really shocking performance. They didn't lay a glove on Brighton."
What it means for the title race
This was Arsenal's heaviest defeat in a season as reigning champions since 1989. For everyone chasing them, that is the useful part. The idea that this Arsenal side would simply win the thing again took a dent on the south coast.
Arteta pushed back on the doom, and he has a point. Fifteen of his players were at the World Cup, which pushed a big chunk of the squad into pre-season late. "What we've done and the way we've competed and the amount of games we've won has been remarkable," he said. Arsenal also spent close to £200m in the summer and the new pieces are still settling.
Three weeks of international football now follow. Arteta gets time to fix what went wrong, and his rivals get three weeks to believe.
Match facts: Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0 Arsenal, Amex Stadium, Saturday 19 September 2026. Brighton move third and lead the Premier League scoring charts on 16 goals. Arsenal's first league defeat of 2026-27 and their heaviest as defending champions since 1989.
