Tottenham Smash Club Record With £100m Sandro Tonali Signing From Newcastle United

Tottenham Hotspur have broken their own transfer record to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a deal worth £100 million, making the Italian midfielder the most expensive player in the club's history.

The 26-year-old becomes the latest headline act to depart St. James' Park this summer, following Bruno Guimarães who completed a £75 million switch to Arsenal earlier in the window. Between the two departures alone, Newcastle have lost players worth close to £175 million — a staggering summer of outgoings for a side that has spent years building toward the top.

Tonali arrived at Newcastle from AC Milan in the summer of 2023 for around £52 million, but his first season was immediately derailed by a ban for betting violations that sidelined him for ten months. He returned last season and proved exactly what Newcastle had paid for — a dominant, physically imposing midfielder with exceptional technical ability and the kind of drive that lifts teammates around him.

For Tottenham, this is a statement signing. Ange Postecoglou has been demanding midfield reinforcements for much of his time at the club, and Tonali — in terms of profile and pedigree — is precisely the type of player that has been missing. He anchors, he carries the ball, and he dictates tempo. In a side that has too often been overrun in the centre of the park, his arrival changes things meaningfully.

The £100 million fee surpasses Tottenham's previous club record and signals serious intent from the Spurs ownership at a time when rivals are also spending heavily. Combined with the earlier free signing of Andy Robertson from Liverpool and the arrival of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52 million, Tottenham have had a transformative summer.

Tonali has also represented Italy at the highest level and was part of the Azzurri squad during the 2025 UEFA Nations League campaign. At 26, he is entering the prime years of his career — and Tottenham will be hoping they have finally found the midfield heartbeat that has eluded them for so long.
