Tottenham Agree £85m Deal for Savinho from Manchester City — What the Signing Means for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal worth up to £85 million with Manchester City for winger Savinho, with the Brazilian international set to undergo a medical in north London. The move marks the conclusion of one of the more drawn-out transfer stories of the summer — Spurs had been interested for several weeks, and the deal is now done in principle.

The 22-year-old is joining a Tottenham side managed by Roberto De Zerbi, who arrived from Marseille at the end of last season. For De Zerbi, Savinho represents exactly the kind of creative, technically gifted wide player his system requires — someone who can take defenders on, create from wide areas, and contribute at both ends of the pitch.

Why Did Man City Sell?

Savinho's time at Manchester City was promising but ultimately limited. He made 24 Premier League appearances in his debut season, starting just seven of them. In a squad as deep as Pep Guardiola's, Savinho was always going to struggle for consistent minutes — and with City already well-stocked in wide areas, allowing him to leave for a significant fee made financial sense.

City receive an initial £75m, with a further £10m in add-ons — of which £5m is described as "effectively guaranteed." For a 22-year-old who contributed in the moments he did play, it's a strong return on their investment.

What It Means for Tottenham

This is a statement signing. Tottenham under De Zerbi have been active this summer, and adding Savinho gives them genuine pace and creativity in wide areas that they were missing. He works best with space to run in behind defences, and his ability to cut inside from the right opens up a range of options.

Spurs are also reported to be in discussions about a potential double deal with City that would bring Omar Marmoush to north London as well. If that move also goes through before the deadline, Tottenham could head into the new season with one of the more exciting forward lines in the top flight.

That said, Savinho's critics will note that his end product — goals and assists — needs to improve from his debut City campaign. He showed flashes, but consistency in the final third is the next stage of his development. Whether Spurs and De Zerbi can unlock that potential will be one of the stories to watch across the 2026/27 season.
