Nottingham Forest have wrapped up one of the most exciting defensive signings of the summer window, bringing in Ousmane Diomande from Sporting CP for a reported £34 million. The 22-year-old Ivorian centre-back has signed a four-year contract at the City Ground, with the option to extend by a further year.

Diomande arrives in the East Midlands having established himself as one of Portuguese football's most reliable defensive talents. In just over two seasons with Sporting, the powerful centre-back racked up 132 appearances, helping the Lisbon club win back-to-back Portuguese league titles. Those performances attracted interest from clubs across Europe, and it is Forest who have won the race for his signature.

Oliver Glasner's side operates with a 3-5-2 system that places enormous demands on its central defenders — not just to defend, but to build from the back and carry the ball with confidence. Diomande fits that profile. Physically imposing and comfortable in possession, he reads the game well and is strong in one-on-one situations, making him a natural fit for Glasner's defensive setup.

The defender's journey to the Premier League has not been a straightforward one. Diomande started his career at Olympic Sport Abobo in his native Ivory Coast before earning a move to Danish club FC Midtjylland, where his performances quickly caught the eye of Sporting CP. He joined Sporting in January 2023 and wasted no time in making an impression, growing into one of the first names on the teamsheet.

On the international stage, Diomande has earned 15 caps for the Ivory Coast, and was part of the squad that represented the Elephants at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. That tournament provided him with the highest-profile stage of his career so far, and he did not look out of place.

For Forest, the deal represents a significant investment in long-term defensive quality. The club has been busy this summer shaping a squad capable of pushing for European football, and Diomande's signing underlines their ambition. At 22, he has time on his side and the potential to develop into one of the Premier League's top defenders under Glasner's guidance.

Sporting will feel the loss of a player who gave so much to the club, but Forest supporters will be excited at what the young Ivorian can offer. The City Ground has a new defensive cornerstone — and at £34 million, this could prove to be outstanding value.
