When Zadok Abu Yohanna was 12 years old, he left his family in Bauchi, northern Nigeria, and moved alone to Kabun to chase a dream at the Ikon Allah Football Academy. Three years ago, he had never played professional football. Today, he is a Brighton & Hove Albion player, signed for £21.5 million, already making pre-season debuts against AS Roma. The speed of his rise is the kind of thing you can't script.

From Bauchi to Stockholm in One Move

Yohanna's story is not one of academy pipelines and careful development programmes. He grew up in Bauchi State, part of Nigeria's Sayawa ethnic community, and made a decision most adults would find daunting while still in primary school — leaving home to pursue football. Ikon Allah FC picked him up in Kabun, and by June 2025, Swedish club AIK had spotted enough to sign him on a deal through to December 2029. He had just turned 18.

What Brighton Are Getting

AIK's head of scouting Fredrik Wisur Hansen described Yohanna as having "burst of acceleration, close control, exceptional one-on-one ability and a refined left foot." He plays off the right wing but cuts inside with his stronger left foot — a movement pattern that draws comparisons with Lamine Yamal and a generation of inverted wingers reshaping the modern game. In 12 appearances for AIK this year before his move, he scored four goals and registered three assists. For a teenager playing senior Swedish football, those numbers stand out.

Why Brighton Beat Everyone Else

Newcastle, Chelsea, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund all tracked Yohanna before Brighton won the race for his signature in June 2026. The £21.5 million fee broke the record for the most expensive player ever sold by a Swedish club. Brighton secured him on a five-year contract running until 2031 — locking in long-term what they clearly see as a significant asset. He made his debut as a substitute in a 3-0 pre-season win over AS Roma in August, a gentle introduction to his new surroundings.
