Newcastle United have identified Benfica right-back Amar Dedic as a top summer transfer target, according to Sky Sports. The Bosnian international has impressed heavily in the Portuguese top flight and has drawn interest from several clubs across Europe this window — but it is Newcastle who are currently pushing hardest for his signature.
Why Dedic Fits Newcastle's System
At 24, Amar Dedic is exactly the profile of player that Newcastle's recruitment team have been targeting this summer — young, athletic, technically capable, and still improving. The right-back position has been flagged as a priority area for head coach Eddie Howe, and Dedic's ability to cover ground at pace, pick out passes in tight areas, and contribute at both ends of the pitch makes him an ideal candidate.
Having arrived at Benfica from Salzburg in 2023, the Bosnian has developed into one of the better full-backs in European football over the past two seasons. His performances in the Champions League last term particularly caught the eye, and those displays have since generated a competitive market for his services.
What It Would Cost
Reports suggest Benfica would want in the region of £25–30 million for Dedic, a figure that Newcastle would need to structure carefully given PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) considerations. However, with their Champions League place secured for next season, the Magpies are in a better financial position to push for top targets without the constraints that limited them in previous windows.
The window runs until September 1, so there remains time to get a deal done. Newcastle will be hoping to add competition and depth across the backline before the Premier League season kicks off on August 21.
