Newcastle United have officially confirmed the signing of Bosnian international full-back Amar Dedic from Portuguese giants Benfica. The deal, worth approximately £29.5 million, sees the 24-year-old defender commit to a five-year contract at St James' Park — reuniting him with head coach Matthias Jaissle, who developed him during their time together at RB Salzburg in Austria.
The Magpies wasted little time pushing the deal through. Dedic completed his medical on Monday and will wear the number 37 shirt, becoming the club's sixth senior arrival of the summer. With Newcastle opening their Premier League campaign against Liverpool this coming weekend, the Bosnian international could be thrown straight into the action.
Why Dedic Was the Name Newcastle Wanted
The Jaissle factor is central to this story. Dedic's relationship with the manager stretches back to their time together in Salzburg, where the coach played a hands-on role in developing the defender from a promising youngster into a polished, two-footed full-back capable of competing at the highest level. That shared history gave Newcastle a significant edge in negotiations — and ultimately proved decisive in convincing Dedic to choose Tyneside over other interested clubs.
Ross Wilson, Newcastle's sporting director, described the signing as a "perfect fit" for the club's new direction. "He's shown his level at Red Bull Salzburg and Benfica as a modern full-back who has the ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch," Wilson said. "He's incredibly hungry to prove himself here at Newcastle United and in the Premier League."
What Dedic Brings to St James' Park
At 24, Dedic is one of the more complete defenders currently available at his level. He can operate on either flank, combines strong defensive instincts with an ability to carry the ball effectively in transition, and already has serious pedigree — having featured in the UEFA Champions League and represented Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Jaissle was open about his excitement at getting the deal done. "He's athletic, aggressive and technically very good, but also has a lot of potential to develop further," the manager said. "He's played in the Champions League and the World Cup. I'm really looking forward to working with him again."
Dedic's Reaction to His Move
The player made no attempt to hide how much this move means to him. "It's a special feeling and a really big honour for me to join Newcastle United," Dedic said in his first interview with the club. "Playing Premier League football at St. James' Park is going to be really special. Every game feels like a big occasion, with an amazing atmosphere. I'm really excited to get started."
He also acknowledged the importance of his personal connection with the manager: "Working with Matthias again was a big factor for me. We know each other well, he knows what I can bring on the pitch and I'm really happy to be playing for him again." Dedic arrives as a ready-made first-team option, and his versatility across the back line gives Jaissle genuine tactical flexibility as the new Premier League season gets underway.
