One of the most extraordinary chapters in Premier League history is over. Mohamed Salah has been released by Liverpool, bringing to a close a nine-year association that produced some of English football's most breathtaking moments. The Egyptian forward departs Anfield as a free agent, with no announcement yet on where he will play next.
Salah joined Liverpool from Roma in the summer of 2017 for £36.9 million — a fee that now looks like one of the greatest pieces of business in football history. What followed was a career at Anfield that defied expectation at every turn.
The numbers tell the story
In nine seasons at Liverpool, Salah scored 228 Premier League goals, making him the outright top scorer in the competition's history. He won the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup, the League Cup, and the Club World Cup with the club. He is Liverpool's all-time top scorer. He won the Premier League Golden Boot on four occasions. In 2017-18, his debut season, he scored 32 league goals — a record for a 38-game Premier League season.
He was, simply, one of the greatest players ever to grace the Premier League.
What went wrong?
The final year of Salah's Liverpool contract had been a source of tension. The club chose not to offer a further extension, believing the squad needed investment across multiple positions and that Salah's age — he turned 34 in June — made a long-term commitment difficult to justify financially. Liverpool have recruited aggressively this summer, bringing in Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for £60m and Victor Munoz from Osasuna for £34.5m. The club are clearly rebuilding.
What next for Salah?
Interest from Saudi Pro League clubs is expected to be significant. Salah had previously resisted overtures from Saudi Arabia on multiple occasions, but at 34 and with no European contract yet secured, the financial packages on offer may prove impossible to ignore. A return to Egypt is possible later in his career. A shock move to a top European side cannot be entirely ruled out — Salah is still operating at a level that would enhance any squad in the world.
For Liverpool, life without their greatest modern icon begins now. For everyone else, it is simply time to say thank you.
