Haaland's Agent Breaks Silence as PSG and Real Madrid Circle Man City's Star Striker

Erling Haaland has a release clause. That much is not in dispute. What is in dispute is the size of it, when it activates, and whether any club in European football is both willing and able to trigger it — because the figures being discussed around a potential exit from Manchester City have reached levels that even the most ambitious boards would struggle to justify on a spreadsheet. Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain all believe there are clauses in the striker's contract that could facilitate a departure, but Haaland's agent has now moved to calm the speculation, insisting that his client is happy at City and not angling for a move this summer.

The Contract That Changed Everything

When Haaland signed a new deal with Manchester City last year, the previous release clause — widely reported to be in the region of €100 million — was removed as part of the renegotiation. City understood the risk of leaving such a clause active as Haaland entered his mid-twenties and established himself as arguably the best centre-forward in the world. The new contract runs until 2034 and makes Haaland one of the highest-paid players in the game. But Real Madrid and Barcelona believe there are still some clauses buried within it, and both clubs have been making enquiries with this in mind. City's asking price, should they ever entertain a sale, is believed to be in the region of £200 million — a fee that has no modern precedent.

PSG's Approach and What It Means

Perhaps the most significant development in the Haaland saga is PSG's decision to formally inform Manchester City of their interest. According to reports from ESPN, PSG have asked City to keep them updated should Haaland ever become available. This is not a formal bid — it is more of a standing declaration of intent — but the fact that a club that has just won the Champions League for the second consecutive year is already positioning itself for what could be the defining transfer of the decade speaks to how seriously the Parisians are taking their own ambitions. Luis Enrique's team is strong but not perfect, and a striker of Haaland's output would transform them from a very good side into a dominant one.

Haaland's Own Ambitions

At 25, Haaland has already won multiple Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and the Champions League with City. He has broken scoring records at every club he has played for. The one major individual honour that continues to elude him is the Ballon d'Or, and the one major trophy not yet in his cabinet is the World Cup — though club football is the primary currency of a striker's legacy. What is known from those close to him is that he has expressed a long-term desire to play in Spain at some point in his career. Whether that desire is strong enough to force a departure from the most successful domestic club in English football history remains to be seen. But it is there. And Real Madrid know it.

City's Dilemma

Manchester City's calculus on this question is not straightforward. They have Haaland under contract until 2034. They have no obligation to sell. And with Pep Guardiola's era drawing toward its natural conclusion, the club's leadership may be reluctant to compound a managerial transition with the loss of the player who makes their system function. But if a fee north of £200 million was genuinely on the table — a fee that would allow City to rebuild significant parts of their squad — the conversation would at least have to be had. For now, the message from City and from Haaland's camp is the same: he is going nowhere. The transfer market rarely takes that answer at face value.

Contract context: Erling Haaland (Norway), Manchester City striker, age 25. New contract signed 2025, runs until 2034. Previous release clause (~€100m) removed in renegotiation. City's reported asking price: £200m. Clubs monitoring: Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG. Agent has publicly stated Haaland is happy at City and not seeking a move in summer 2026.
