Chelsea have bolstered their defensive options with the signing of French centre-back Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace in a deal worth €60.7 million (approximately £51m), with the 26-year-old agreeing a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2032.

The signing is a statement of ambition from Xabi Alonso's Chelsea side. Lacroix arrives at the peak of his powers — physically imposing at 6ft 3in, commanding in the air, devastatingly quick across the ground for a centre-back, and increasingly assured with the ball at his feet. He is precisely the type of modern, dynamic defender that elite clubs are competing to recruit.

Crystal Palace will be quietly satisfied with a deal that nets them a massive profit. They signed Lacroix from VfL Wolfsburg for just £18m in August 2024, and after two extraordinary seasons at Selhurst Park — including a full performance in the 2025 FA Cup final victory over Manchester City and a starring role in Palace's 2026 UEFA Conference League triumph over Rayo Vallecano — they are selling him for nearly three times what they paid.

During his time in south London, Lacroix also earned his first senior call-up to the France national team, making his debut in March 2026. That international recognition, combined with winning silverware domestically and in Europe, confirmed what had long been apparent to those watching the Premier League closely — this is a top-level operator.

For Chelsea, who have made significant defensive investment in recent transfer windows, Lacroix adds genuine quality and competition at the back. He is expected to form a regular central defensive partnership at Stamford Bridge as Alonso looks to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title and progressing deep into European competition.

The deal was officially confirmed by Chelsea Football Club on 29 July 2026, with Lacroix expected to join his new teammates for pre-season preparations immediately.
