An era at Anfield is officially over. Mohamed Salah has signed a two-year deal with Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor, ending a nine-year stay at Liverpool that made him one of the greatest players in Premier League history.
How It Ended
The departure was not a clean farewell. Salah's relationship with manager Arne Slot deteriorated badly in his final months, with the Egyptian international publicly expressing frustration over his reduced role and a contract offer he described as inadequate. When no agreement was reached, Liverpool allowed him to leave on a free transfer at the end of the 2025-26 season.
He flew to Istanbul earlier this month to complete his move to Trabzonspor, signing the two-year deal that will see him play out the latter stage of his career in Turkey. He is 34 years old.
What Salah Gave Liverpool
The numbers remain staggering. Over nine seasons, Salah scored more than 220 Premier League goals, winning the Golden Boot on three separate occasions. He was the central figure in Liverpool's Champions League triumph in 2019 and their Premier League title win in 2020 — the club's first top-flight championship in 30 years.
He arrived from Roma in 2017 for around £37 million, at the time a club-record signing. He repaid that many times over, becoming the most decorated African player in Premier League history.
Andoni Iraola Moves On Without Him
For new Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, rebuilding without Salah — and without Andy Robertson, who also left this summer — is the defining task of his first full season. The club has moved quickly, bringing in Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth to cover at left-back, and completing a deal for Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo to shore up the defence.
Liverpool open their 2026-27 Premier League campaign imminently, and the pressure on Iraola to re-establish the club at the summit of English football is already considerable.
