Manchester United have got their man. After months of pursuit and a deal that nearly fell apart over a massive valuation gap last summer, the Red Devils have now agreed a £70 million fee with Brighton to sign midfielder Carlos Baleba — and the player is expected to complete his medical within hours.

The agreement is structured as £65m guaranteed, with an additional £5m in add-ons. Brighton have also negotiated a sell-on clause into the deal. Baleba will sign a five-year contract at Old Trafford.

Third Midfield Signing of the Summer

The 22-year-old Cameroonian becomes United's third midfield addition of the window, joining Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. Sky Sports News had been tracking United's interest in Baleba since last autumn and broke news of their January enquiry earlier this year.

A year ago, Brighton were quoting a fee that exceeded the £115m Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo. The gap was too wide, and Baleba stayed on the south coast for another season — one in which his form fell off notably. But United's belief in the player never wavered. Now, with his market value reset after a difficult campaign, they've moved quickly to get the deal done at a far more manageable price.

What Does Baleba Bring to Old Trafford?

Baleba is a defensive midfielder built to press, protect, and drive forward. He wins the ball back aggressively in deep areas and has the athletic profile to carry it through midfield at pace. Under Michael Carrick, those qualities fill a real gap — a presence capable of bringing defensive structure without sacrificing the team's ability to transition quickly.

Santos and Tielemans are smart pickups, but Baleba offers something different: raw defensive muscle combined with genuine dynamism. He has cited Paul Pogba, Yaya Touré and Andres Iniesta as personal influences — a blend of power and technical craft that captures his own ambitions well. Inside the club, there is a belief that the very best of Baleba, at 22, remains ahead of him.

When Will He Play?

Not immediately. Baleba sustained an ankle ligament injury in pre-season and is not expected to be available until around mid-September. That timeline places him in contention for United's clash with Manchester City on September 13 and the Fulham fixture a week later. The three-week international break that follows gives him extra runway to settle before Carrick throws him into the mix.

United open their 2026/27 Premier League campaign Saturday at Hull City — a game Baleba will watch from the stands. But when he is fit and sharp, his arrival should change the dynamic of this midfield in a way the other additions simply cannot.
