Man United Draw the Line: Bruno Fernandes Is Not For Sale at Any Price

Manchester United have made it crystal clear to every interested party: Bruno Fernandes is not going anywhere. The club captain, who still has three years left on his contract, has been linked with a move away as United continue their post-Ratcliffe restructure — but those responsible for football decisions at Old Trafford have drawn a firm line.

Interest has been real. Reports out of Spain suggested Atletico Madrid had run the rule over the Portuguese captain, while a couple of Saudi clubs made preliminary approaches earlier in the summer. All were rebuffed without hesitation.

Why United Will Not Sell

It comes down to what Fernandes represents both on and off the pitch. On the field, he is still the engine of United's attacking play — his numbers over the past three seasons rank among the best in the Premier League for a central midfielder. There is no obvious like-for-like replacement in the market, and United's hierarchy knows it.

Off it, Fernandes is the most senior voice in the dressing room, the player other new signings look to when they arrive. Ruben Amorim built his system at Sporting CP around a similar profile and the two men have a long working relationship. Selling Fernandes now, with a new manager still in his first full season, would be chaotic.

What Atletico Madrid Were Thinking

Diego Simeone's side were genuinely interested. Having sold Koke at the end of last season, Atletico had a significant hole in their midfield — the kind of creative, hard-working role that Fernandes occupies. They floated the idea of a move but United's response was essentially: he's not available, don't bother coming back with a number.

There was never a formal bid. Atletico read the room and moved on. They are now pursuing other targets with that budget.

Fernandes' Own Position

Sources close to the player say he is not pushing for a move. He is settled in Manchester, committed to Amorim's project, and motivated by a desire to win something significant with United before his career winds down. The Portuguese captain is 32 in September — he has two or three elite years left and he would rather spend them trying to restore United to relevance than chasing a pay cheque elsewhere.
