Bayern Munich began the defence of their Bundesliga title the way champions like to begin things. Stuttgart were beaten 5-1 at the Allianz Arena, and the scoreline flattered the visitors less than it might sound.

Vincent Kompany's side have now won both of their competitive games this season, having taken the German Super Cup off Borussia Dortmund 2-1 last week.

Kimmich runs the first half

Dayot Upamecano headed Bayern in front on 21 minutes, a clever finish across goal from a Joshua Kimmich corner. Kimmich set up the second too, threading Michael Olise through on 55 minutes after Stuttgart had briefly drawn level.

That equaliser came from Josha Vagnoman, who smashed one home three minutes before Olise's goal. Fabian Bredlow in the Stuttgart goal had made several good saves up to that point and looked like he might keep his side in it.

Then it fell apart

Vagnoman went from scorer to villain in five minutes. Trying to clear an Alphonso Davies cross, he slipped and put the ball into his own net. Olise thought he had a second from Harry Kane's pass, but VAR ruled it out for offside.

Aleksandar Pavlovic tapped in the fourth after unselfish work from substitute Ismael Saibari, a £43m summer arrival from PSV Eindhoven making his Bundesliga debut. Saibari then set up Luis Diaz for the fifth in stoppage time.

Saibari looks like a good buy already

Two assists in a debut off the bench is a decent way to introduce yourself. Bayern spent heavily on him and the early signs are that he understands where the runners are, which is the whole job in that side.
