Atletico Madrid Now Willing to Sell Julian Alvarez as Arsenal Plot Summer Move

The transfer story that has been building quietly all summer is now gaining serious momentum. Atletico Madrid are open to selling Julian Alvarez, and Arsenal are the club most closely watching the situation unfold.

Multiple reports emerging from Spain this week confirm that Atletico's hierarchy has had internal discussions about cashing in on the Argentine striker. The club paid Manchester City a record £115 million for his services two years ago, but a shifting financial picture and a desire to reinvest in a new attacking setup has changed the calculus.

What Changed at Atletico?

Alvarez's debut season in Madrid was strong but not without friction. His second season was disrupted by a thigh injury that kept him out for three months, and though he returned to form in the final stretch of the campaign — finishing with 19 goals across all competitions — sources close to the club suggest Diego Simeone's preferred striker profile has evolved.

Atletico are understood to be chasing a different type of forward — more of a physical target man who suits their increasingly direct style. Alvarez, for all his quality, is the kind of press-and-run attacker who thrives in a system that asks more of him positionally. That alignment isn't guaranteed at Atletico anymore.

Arsenal's Interest Grows

Arsenal have been linked with Alvarez since at least January, when their failure to add firepower in the winter window became apparent. Mikel Arteta spoke vaguely about wanting "quality in every position" at the end of that month, but club insiders knew the attacking department was the real target.

With reports suggesting Atletico would accept somewhere between £90 million and £100 million — a significant discount from what they paid — Arsenal's board is said to be actively discussing the viability of a deal. No formal bid has been made yet, but the groundwork is there.

The Summer Window Closes Fast

Arsenal's opening Premier League fixture is on Saturday. They will begin the season with the squad they have, but the window does not shut until the end of August. That gives Arteta's side a three-week runway to land what would be their most significant signing in years — if they choose to move.

Everything points toward Arsenal wanting Alvarez. The question now is whether they move quickly enough, or whether another club gets there first.
