Arsenal Target Jules Kounde in £55m Barcelona Raid After Missing Out on Konsa as Arteta Fixes Defence

Arsenal are preparing a £55 million bid for Barcelona defender Jules Koundé as Mikel Arteta looks to resolve a defensive crisis that threatens to undermine his side's title ambitions before the season has even started. The move comes after the Gunners were priced out of a deal for Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa, with Villa demanding more than €75 million for the England international.

Why Koundé Fits Arsenal's Blueprint

Arteta has long admired Koundé for his tactical versatility — the 27-year-old can operate at right-back or as a centre-back, giving Arsenal the flexibility their system demands. Following the injury concerns surrounding both Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu, the Gunners need reliable, high-quality options across the defensive line, and Koundé provides exactly that.

His technical quality is not in question. Since joining Barcelona from Sevilla in 2022, Koundé has been one of LaLiga's most consistent performers — a composed, ball-playing defender who thrives under pressure and in high defensive lines. He would slot into Arsenal's system seamlessly.

Barcelona Open to a Sale

Despite signing a recent contract extension, Koundé's status at the Catalan club has shifted significantly under new head coach Hansi Flick. Reports from Goal.com indicate that Flick is planning to use Eric Garcia as his first-choice right-sided defender this season, effectively leaving Koundé on the periphery. Barcelona, always keen to balance the books to meet LaLiga's strict financial fair play thresholds, are believed to be open to a sale at the right price.

Adding further context: the Catalan giants have also reportedly made contact with Tottenham Hotspur over right-back Pedro Porro, widely seen as a potential Koundé replacement — further evidence that his departure from Camp Nou is increasingly likely.

PSG and Bayern Lurking

Arsenal face competition from Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, both of whom are tracking the situation. But with the transfer window closing on September 1 and Arsenal's need being acute, the Gunners are expected to push hardest and fastest. If a deal can be agreed this week, Koundé could line up for Arsenal on the opening day of the Premier League season on August 21.
