Mexico End 40-Year Knockout Curse With Dominant 2-0 Win Over Ecuador at World Cup 2026

Forty years is a long time to carry the weight of a nation's heartbreak. Mexico have been one of football's great underachievers at the World Cup knockout stage — crashing out at the Round of 16 in five consecutive tournaments. But on a charged night at the Estadio Azteca, in front of a crowd that shook the old stadium to its foundations, El Tri finally ended the curse. Goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez secured a 2-0 win over Ecuador, and for the first time since 1986, Mexico are through to the World Cup quarter-finals — or at least, the modern equivalent.

A Fast Start That Settled the Nerves

Mexico wasted little time making their intentions clear. Quiñones broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute with a powerful, driven finish after a quick one-two on the edge of the box, and the atmosphere inside the Azteca shifted from nervous anticipation to outright celebration. It was exactly the start the hosts needed. Jiménez, who has been superb throughout the group stage, had earlier spurned a one-on-one opportunity but made amends in emphatic style nine minutes later, finishing low and hard past the helpless Ecuador goalkeeper to make it 2-0 before the interval.

Ecuador Had the Ball but Not the Goals

The Ecuadorians — who topped their group with some eye-catching football — were not without moments. They controlled possession for long spells in the second half, finishing the match with 57% of the ball. But controlling possession and threatening the goal are two different things. Ecuador managed just one shot on target across the 90 minutes, a damning statistic that tells the full story of a side that ran out of ideas in the final third when it mattered most. A late red card for Hincapié added further humiliation to their evening.

The Curse Is Broken — What's Next for Mexico?

The match was not without its chaos — a lightning delay held up the start, and Mexico's performance had rough edges despite the comfortable scoreline. But their supporters do not care about aesthetics tonight. They care about that number: 40. Four decades of round-of-16 exits, four decades of "fifth game syndrome," erased on their own turf. Mexico will now face either England or DR Congo in the last 16, a tantalising prospect for a squad that is playing with genuine belief for the first time in a generation.
