Lamine Yamal has a message for France ahead of their 2026 World Cup semi-final: be afraid. The 17-year-old Barcelona superstar told reporters on Monday that Spain are "the best team in the tournament" and that they have "nothing to fear" from Didier Deschamps' side. Coming from almost any other teenager, the words might ring hollow. Coming from Yamal â two goals and three assists in the tournament so far â they carry weight.
The Numbers Back Him Up
Yamal is the youngest outfield player ever to score at a World Cup knockout stage. He has created more chances than any other player at this tournament (18), and his dribble success rate of 74% leads all attackers. Spain have not conceded in 270 minutes of football since a group-stage opener. He is not boasting. He is just describing what he has seen.
France vs Mbappe â the Battle Within the Battle
France have their own teenage reference point â Kylian Mbappe, who lit up the 2018 World Cup at 19. But Yamal is doing it at 17, and he is doing it with a maturity that even Mbappe took years to develop. The semi-final on Wednesday sets up as one of the great individual battles: Mbappe against Yamal, France's experience against Spain's youth.
Spain's Collective Confidence
Yamal was careful to frame it as a team statement, not personal bravado. "We have shown throughout the tournament that we can beat anyone," he said. "France are a great team, but so are we. They should be worried." Head coach Luis de la Fuente has built a side that plays without fear, presses relentlessly, and creates more through the thirds than any other team remaining in the draw.
