England were staring down the barrel of a World Cup humiliation when DR Congo's Brian Cipenga tucked away a seventh-minute opener to leave the Three Lions rattled and the crowd inside Atlanta Stadium buzzing with noise. What followed was a 68-minute examination of whether this England side could handle real adversity — and Harry Kane, as he so often does in a white shirt, provided the answer with a brace that arrived just when it was needed most.

DR Congo's Perfect Start

The Congolese started at a pace that clearly unsettled Thomas Tuchel's side. Cipenga's goal came from sustained early pressure, a reminder that this expanded 48-team World Cup has brought through African nations with genuine quality and absolutely no fear of the established names. England couldn't find their rhythm, and the first half was, to put it generously, uncomfortable viewing. Jude Bellingham showed flashes of intent but the creative spark was inconsistent, and for long periods the midfield struggled to get the ball in good positions.

Kane's Clinical Turnaround

Then, with 15 minutes remaining, came the moment England had been waiting for. Bellingham drove into the DR Congo half and the ball broke to Kane, who found just enough space inside the area to lash a first-time finish high into the roof of the net — 75 minutes, 1-1. Suddenly England remembered they were supposed to be favourites. Twelve minutes later, after DR Congo threw caution to the wind in search of a second goal, a defensive mistake handed Kane a second chance — and he converted with the cold certainty that has defined his entire career. 2-1 to England, job done, just about.

Kane Now Levels With Pele

The brace was historic. It moves Kane to 12 World Cup goals across his career, drawing level with Pele in the all-time list. He is now just one behind Miroslav Klose's record of 13, and with England through to the Round of 16 against Mexico, the opportunity to become the outright World Cup top scorer is very much alive. For a man who once carried the burden of impossible expectations in an England shirt, this tournament is fast becoming his crowning achievement at international level.

What England Must Fix

The win was enough and the Kane headlines will dominate — but England's performance raised real questions. They were outplayed for 74 minutes against a side ranked significantly below them. If they arrive at the Azteca playing that way against Mexico with a full home crowd behind them, it will be a very different challenge. Tuchel knows it. The squad knows it. The question is whether they can fix it before it costs them.
