There are football matches, and then there are football occasions. England versus Mexico at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City is the latter — a venue that has hosted some of the most historic moments in the sport's history, from Maradona's Hand of God to the greatest goal ever scored, and now it hosts a World Cup Round of 16 tie between two nations with their own rich and complicated relationship with the tournament. For Harry Kane, who arrives on four goals and needing two more to surpass Miroslav Klose's all-time World Cup record of sixteen, the backdrop could not be more theatrical.

Kane and the Record

Klose scored sixteen goals across four World Cups between 2002 and 2014 — a record that looked untouchable for years. Kane has reached fourteen across two tournaments, with four of those coming in this competition already. At 32, this is almost certainly his last World Cup, and if England go deep enough — potentially three more games — the record is within reach. What makes this particularly striking is that Kane has done it entirely on his own terms. He has not needed to be in sensational form; he has simply been ruthlessly efficient whenever chances have presented themselves. His positional play and movement in the box have never been sharper.

The Azteca and England's History

England have only played at the Azteca twice before. The first occasion was in 1986 — the quarter-final against Argentina that contained both the Hand of God and the Goal of the Century in the same match. The second was a friendly in 2001 that England won with a Michael Owen hat-trick. The ground has been redeveloped significantly for this tournament, expanding its capacity and replacing its old surface, but it still carries the atmosphere of a stadium that has witnessed history repeatedly. Mexico's supporters will be exceptionally loud, and England will need to manage that environment carefully.

What England Need to Watch

Thomas Tuchel has built England into a disciplined, compact unit that is difficult to break down but occasionally struggles to break teams down themselves. Against Mexico, the concern is the midfield. Edson Álvarez is one of the best defensive midfielders in the world, and neutralizing him will determine how much space England can find in the channels. If Álvarez is on top of his game, Kane sees very little service. If England can bypass him through quick vertical passing, the game opens up considerably. Tuchel has drilled his side well and England have shown tactical discipline throughout the tournament. Sunday night will test whether that holds under maximum pressure.
