Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a club-record deal to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United. The fee is reported at £92.5m with a further £7.5m in achievable add-ons — making the Italian one of the most expensive midfielders ever purchased by a Premier League club, and the most expensive Italian player in the history of football.

Why Tonali? The Roberto De Zerbi Effect

The short answer is Roberto De Zerbi. When Tottenham appointed the Italian head coach, he wanted to reshape the squad around high-intensity pressing and technically gifted midfield controllers. Tonali fits that profile perfectly — wins the ball back quickly, moves it smartly, and covers enormous ground.

What Tonali Brings to Spurs

After returning from his 10-month betting ban in 2024, Tonali re-established himself as one of the top midfielders in the Premier League at Newcastle. Tottenham are spending heavily this summer, with combined outlay past £200m before pre-season has even begun.

The Newcastle Question

For Newcastle, the sale is difficult but the financials were hard to resist. The club signed Tonali for £52m from AC Milan in 2023, generating a substantial profit even after his suspension. Whether Spurs can turn this investment into genuine Premier League progress will define whether De Zerbi's project is the real thing.
