Anthony Gordon has completed his move to Barcelona. The deal, worth £69.3 million plus add-ons, makes the England winger one of the most expensive players in the La Liga club's recent history. For Newcastle United, it is a significant loss. For Gordon himself, it is the culmination of years of relentless development — a journey from a teenager on Everton's books to a genuine wanted man at one of football's biggest clubs.

Gordon joined Barcelona ahead of the 2026-27 season and has signed a contract running until 2031. The 25-year-old underwent his medical in the Spanish city before being unveiled at Camp Nou, where he will link up with fellow Spaniard Lamine Yamal — a pairing that promises to be one of the most dangerous in European football.

What Barcelona Are Getting

Gordon is a player who has improved dramatically season on season. The raw energy and direct running that made him stand out at Everton has been refined into something more complete. At Newcastle under Eddie Howe, he developed an end product to match his work rate — consistently reaching double figures in goal contributions across a Premier League campaign.

His 2026 World Cup performances with England, including the goal against Norway that helped send England to the semi-finals, also underlined that he handles the biggest stages. Barcelona's sporting directors have watched him across two seasons and are convinced they are getting a player ready to shine at Champions League level.

What It Means for Newcastle

The fee of £69.3m represents exceptional business for Newcastle, who signed Gordon from Everton in January 2023 for around £40-45 million. The Toon Army will feel the loss — Gordon became a fan favourite from virtually the moment he arrived — but the profit generated gives Eddie Howe real funds to reshape his squad ahead of the new season.

Everton are also due a 15% sell-on clause from the profit Newcastle make, so the south end of Merseyside will also benefit from this deal in its own way.
