There was nothing subtle about Sweden's arrival at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In Monterrey, they tore Tunisia apart 5-1 in their Group F opener — a result that sent a clear message to every remaining team: these Swedes are genuine contenders.

Alexander Isak (Liverpool) and Viktor Gyokeres (Arsenal) both scored in a dominant display that showcased exactly why Sweden were tipped as dark horse contenders.

Isak Banishes Liverpool Doubts

Yasin Ayari opened the scoring after Isak's pressing created the opening. Isak himself added Sweden's second — cutting in from the left and curling a precise finish into the far corner. His Premier League debut season with Liverpool was inconsistent, but on the world stage, the real Isak showed up.

Gyokeres Clinical for Arsenal and Sweden

Sweden's third came after Isak's relentless high press forced Tunisia captain Skhiri into a catastrophic error. Gyokeres composed himself and slotted home to end the contest. Substitute Svanberg added a fourth (VAR confirmed it on-side), and Ayari completed his brace deep in stoppage time.

Tunisia Fight But Sweden Ruthless

Omar Rekik's header just before half-time gave Tunisia brief hope at 2-1. But Sweden's second half was merciless, with the 5-1 scoreline a fair reflection of their dominance.

Group F Standings

Sweden top Group F on three points. Netherlands and Japan drew 2-2. Sweden face the Dutch next in the group's defining clash.
