Haaland Signs Until 2034: The Most Extraordinary Contract in Football History Explained

Erling Haaland has signed a new nine-and-a-half-year contract with Manchester City, keeping him at the Etihad until the summer of 2034. No release clauses. No get-out options for rival clubs. Around £500,000 per week, making him City's highest-paid player in the club's history. This is not just a contract — it is a declaration that the most lethal striker on the planet is going nowhere.

The previous contract had clauses that allowed certain clubs to trigger an exit. Madrid were the most obvious beneficiary of those provisions, and the rumours linking Haaland to the Bernabeu never fully went away. With the new deal, those clauses are gone. City have made their position unambiguous — they built their squad around Haaland and they intend to keep building around him for the foreseeable future.

The length alone makes this unprecedented in the context of top European football. A nine-and-a-half-year deal for a player who is already one of the best in the world is an extraordinary show of confidence by both parties. Haaland trusts City to remain competitive at the highest level well into the next decade. City trust that Haaland, who will be 33 when the contract expires, will continue performing to the standards they have grown accustomed to.

What It Costs and What It Buys

The reported wages of around £500,000 per week place Haaland as City's highest earner — above the deal that Kevin De Bruyne held for much of the last decade. On an annual basis, the total wage package runs to somewhere in the region of £26 million a year. Over the full contract duration, and before bonuses and commercial income, this represents a commitment that dwarfs most transfers outright.

What City get in return is the most reliable goal scorer in world football. Since arriving from Borussia Dortmund, Haaland has broken Premier League scoring records, won league titles, and redefined what it means to be a striker at the top level. His movement, finishing, and physical power make him almost impossible to defend against when City are at their best. Locking that in on a long-term basis makes complete sense.

The Real Madrid Question

Real Madrid have wanted Haaland for years. They watched helplessly as he chose City over them when leaving Dortmund. They watched helplessly again as his previous contract was extended. Now, without release clauses, they would need City's agreement to even begin a conversation — and City have made absolutely clear they are not interested in selling.

There are voices who point out that a decade is a very long time in football — that circumstances can change, that clubs can find other ways to accelerate a departure if a player truly wants to leave. That is true in theory. But City have structured this deal specifically to make it as difficult as possible. The message to every competitor in Europe is clear: Haaland is ours.

Beyond the Numbers

There is something almost philosophical about a 23-year-old signing a contract that runs to age 33. Haaland is betting on his own longevity, his own body, and his own desire to keep performing at this level for another decade. Most players at his age might think about keeping options open. He has chosen to plant a flag.

Whether he sees out every year of this deal is a different question. Football has a habit of surprising everyone. But for now, in this moment, Manchester City have their striker secured well into the next decade — and the rest of European football is left to plan around a forward they cannot touch.
