It is one of the more awkward situations in English football right now. Liam Delap joined Chelsea last June for £30 million, signing a six-year contract and arriving as one of the most talked-about young strikers in the country after his outstanding season at Ipswich Town. One year later, he has barely played. And with the summer transfer window now officially open, multiple clubs are beginning to circle.
Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Everton have all been linked with moves for the 23-year-old. Chelsea, according to multiple reports, are willing to listen. The striker who was supposed to be a building block for the next era at Stamford Bridge now finds himself in the bewildering position of being a transfer commodity before his Chelsea story has truly begun.
How Did It Come to This?
Delap arrived at Chelsea as the club's clear first-choice striker, the long-term answer to a problem the club had been trying to solve for years. His 12 goals at Ipswich in a relegated side had scouts from across Europe interested, and Chelsea moved quickly to trigger his release clause before rivals could act.
But the 2025-26 season unfolded awkwardly. Delap made 28 Premier League appearances — more than enough — but started only 12 of them. His one league goal, in a 2-1 defeat to Fulham in January, tells a story of opportunities not taken and confidence fragmented. The physical tools are all there: the strength, the aerial ability, the hold-up play that made him so effective under Kieran McKenna's system at Ipswich. In the more complex tactical environment at Chelsea, surrounded by technically superior teammates moving at a different tempo, something did not quite click.
He did contribute elsewhere — a hat-trick of assists in an FA Cup fifth-round win over Hull City, a Champions League goal against Barcelona — but for a striker signed at that fee, the league goal tally of one is not what anyone envisioned.
The Clubs Interested
Aston Villa are the most serious suitors, according to multiple outlets. Head of football Monchi has been building steadily since his arrival at Villa Park, and a physical, mobile striker who can lead the line for both Premier League and European competition is a priority. Delap fits the profile — young, English, good in the air, improving.
Newcastle's interest is motivated by similar logic. Eddie Howe has long sought a striker who can handle a target-man role when required but is mobile enough to press from the front. Delap, who watched Alexander Isak's excellence from the dugout during his time in the Premier League, would not be Isak — but at £30 million, he would be significantly better value than any alternative at that price point.
Everton, somewhat surprisingly, have also been mentioned. Sean Dyche's replacement — whoever Everton appoint as manager this summer — will want their own striker, and Delap's profile suits the physical approach Everton have traditionally favoured.
What Chelsea Will Do
Chelsea, under Enzo Maresca, are prioritising space in the squad for higher-profile summer additions. Reports suggest they have identified alternative attacking targets in the €75-80 million range, and Delap's departure would fund a significant portion of that outlay.
The player himself, according to sources close to his camp, is open to a move if regular football cannot be guaranteed at Stamford Bridge. He has international ambitions — he remains eligible for England at senior level, having only represented the country at youth levels — and knows that another season of 12 league starts and one goal will not put him in Thomas Tuchel's thinking.
The summer window runs until September 1. Delap's Chelsea chapter may be shorter than either party imagined. But for a player of his age and talent, a move to a club where he can start week in, week out might be exactly what the career needs.
