Arne Slot Sacked by Liverpool: What Went Wrong and Who Comes Next?

It started with so much promise. Arne Slot arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2024, stepping into one of the most difficult jobs in football — succeeding Jürgen Klopp — with an impressive Feyenoord track record and a clear tactical identity. For a while, things went well. Liverpool won the Premier League title in 2024-25, and Slot looked like the right man for the long haul.

Then the wheels came off. Quietly at first, then very publicly.

Liverpool have now confirmed that Slot has left the club, with the parting described as mutual — though few within the game believe the circumstances were entirely amicable. A run of poor form through the second half of the 2025-26 campaign, a reported breakdown in communication between the manager and several senior players, and most notably his very public fallout with Mohamed Salah back in December, all contributed to an atmosphere that became increasingly difficult to manage.

The Beginning of the End

The Salah situation was the most visible flashpoint. When footage emerged of what appeared to be a heated exchange between Slot and Salah after a league match in December 2025, supporters and pundits began asking serious questions about the dressing room culture. Shortly after, reports emerged that Salah's future at the club was uncertain — a story that eventually concluded with his departure this summer.

Without Salah operating at his best, Liverpool's attack lacked the unpredictability and cutting edge that had made them so formidable in the title-winning season. Their Champions League campaign also petered out earlier than expected, and with the squad ageing in key areas and a manager seemingly unable to arrest the slide, the decision was eventually made to move on.

Enter Iraola

The man tasked with picking up the pieces is Andoni Iraola, the former Bournemouth manager whose work on the south coast drew admiring glances from clubs far larger than the Cherries. Iraola's brand of football — intense, organised, physically demanding — is in many ways the opposite of what Liverpool fans came to expect under Klopp's charismatic pressing style. But he has an undeniable track record, and Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group, are clearly convinced he is the right fit for the next chapter.

There is a significant rebuilding job ahead. With Salah, Andy Robertson, and Ibrahim Konate all departing this summer, the squad needs considerable investment. FSG are expected to back the new manager with a substantial transfer budget, though the specific figures being discussed have not been publicly confirmed.

What Comes Next?

The 2026-27 season will effectively be a reset for Liverpool. The hope is that Iraola can blend the experience within the existing squad — players like Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Cody Gakpo — with new signings who fit his demanding tactical requirements. The club have already confirmed Jeremy Jacquet, a 20-year-old French defender, as one incoming arrival.

It will take patience. But Liverpool, under the right conditions, are very capable of being back where they want to be.

For Arne Slot, who won the title in his first season and still departed under difficult circumstances, the narrative is a complicated one. He will have time to reflect. His next job will be an interesting one to watch.
