Darwin Nunez is heading back to Europe this summer, and Chelsea appear to be the frontrunners to land him. The Uruguayan striker, 26, has made it clear he wants to leave Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia after a difficult first year at the club, and his representatives have reportedly confirmed that personal terms will not be an obstacle. The only question, as is often the case with these situations, is which club moves first.
Nunez joined Al-Hilal from Liverpool last summer in a transfer worth around 53 million euros. It didn't go as planned. He managed six goals in 16 league games, and when Karim Benzema arrived during the January window, Nunez found himself squeezed out of the starting eleven. For a striker of his temperament and energy — someone who needs rhythm and momentum — sitting on the fringes was never going to work long-term.
Why Chelsea are interested
Chelsea spent close to 340 million euros in the summer of 2025 and still don't have the dominant striker they've been looking for since Didier Drogba. Nunez, at around 30 million euros — a significant discount on what Al-Hilal paid — represents what is being called a market opportunity. He's still young, has genuine pace and physical presence, and his record at Liverpool showed flashes of a player capable of elite output when given a settled run in a functioning system. Chelsea's system has improved. Their structure is more coherent now. Nunez could thrive there in a way his Saudi stint never allowed.
Newcastle United have also been mentioned as interested. If Newcastle can offer Champions League football next season — they're still in the mix for European places — they become an attractive destination. For now, Chelsea are understood to be in direct contact with the player's representatives.
What happens next and the timeline
The summer transfer window in England opens on June 15. Nothing will be confirmed before then. But the groundwork appears to be in place on multiple fronts. Nunez wants out. Al-Hilal are open to selling at a sensible fee. Chelsea want a striker. Whether all the pieces come together in one deal is never a certainty in football — but this has the feel of a move that finds a way to happen before the end of July.
