Rasmus Højlund is not coming back to Manchester United. That much is now clear. Napoli's sporting director Giovanni Manna confirmed this week that the Italian club intend to make the Danish striker's loan permanent this summer, with a fee of €44 million agreed in principle between the two clubs. The 23-year-old joined Napoli last summer on a season-long loan, and his performances in Serie A have been good enough to convince the Neapolitans that they want him on a permanent basis regardless of whether they qualify for the Champions League — a detail that removes what had looked like the main condition hanging over the deal.

Why Napoli Are Committed

Manna's public declaration was not a courtesy statement. Napoli officials have been consistent in their messaging all season: they rate Højlund and want to keep him. The 23-year-old has contributed 13 goals and four assists in 35 appearances across all competitions this campaign — not a career-best return, but a thoroughly respectable one for a striker adjusting to a new country and a new system. More than the numbers, though, Napoli's coaching staff have been impressed with his physical presence, his ability to hold up play and bring teammates into the game, and his mentality in a league where centre-forwards are worked harder than almost anywhere else in Europe.

Manchester United's Position

United, for their part, are willing to sell. Højlund was a big-money signing in 2023 — brought from Atalanta for a fee that rose to around £72 million — and the club's plans at centre-forward have shifted significantly since then. Rasmus never fully nailed down the number nine shirt at Old Trafford, cycling between excellent patches and frustrating runs of form. Now with new arrivals and a tactical reset under way at United this summer, moving him permanently and recouping €44 million represents a straightforward piece of business. United are not in a position to turn down meaningful fees for players who are not in the manager's plans.

What This Means for Both Clubs

For Napoli, it means building their attack around a striker who is still only 23 and improving. The investment makes long-term sense if Højlund continues his upward trajectory in the right environment. For United, it closes the chapter on a signing that promised more than it delivered, and frees up both wages and funds for a summer rebuild that is beginning to take shape. Not every transfer works out. The good clubs recognise that early and act decisively. This looks like exactly that.

Transfer context: Rasmus Højlund, 23, joined Napoli on loan from Manchester United in summer 2025. Permanent fee: €44m. 2025-26 stats: 13 goals, 4 assists in 35 appearances. Manchester United signed Højlund from Atalanta in 2023 for approx. £72m. Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna confirmed deal intent, May 6, 2026.
