Mohamed Salah's Liverpool Exit: End of an Era, and What Comes Next

It's actually happening. Mohamed Salah is leaving Liverpool. After nine years, 255 goals, two league titles, and a Champions League winner's medal, the Egyptian forward will walk out of Anfield at the end of this season as a free agent. The club confirmed it in March, and since then the question everyone keeps asking is simple: where does he go?

How the relationship soured

This wasn't a clean break. Salah was direct and public about his grievances — saying his relationship with manager Arne Slot was nonexistent and accusing the club of making him a scapegoat after a rough start to the season. The 3-3 draw at Leeds in December seemed to be the flashpoint. Salah felt he was thrown under the bus and said so. It was an unusually messy falling-out for a player of his standing, and Liverpool found themselves on the back foot in the court of public opinion. The club confirmed his departure before the story could spiral any further.

What he leaves behind

Nine years. 255 goals. 435 appearances. He joins the top three goal-scorers in Liverpool's entire history. He won them the Premier League in 2019-20 and again in 2024-25. He won them the Champions League in 2018-19. He was, for stretches of his career, the best player in the world. Whatever the politics of his exit, that record stands alone. The Kop will give him a send-off he deserves, and he deserves one.

Where next?

His agent Ramy Abbas Issa was careful with his words: "We do not know where Mohamed will play next season. This also means no one else knows." Which is agent-speak for: we have options and we are taking our time. Saudi Arabia has been linked repeatedly. There is talk of a European club preparing a 20 million euros per year offer. Juventus has been mentioned. At 34, the relentless demands of the Premier League may no longer appeal. Wherever he lands, he arrives as the kind of name that shifts shirts and fills stadiums. That still has value.
