Ibrahima Konate could be the next big name to leave Liverpool this summer. The French centre-back's contract expires in June, and while talks over an extension have taken place, no agreement has been reached and serious clubs across Europe are starting to take notice. At 25, with a Champions League quarter-final campaign behind him and a World Cup in France's future, Konate represents the kind of free agent opportunity that simply does not come around very often.

What is Liverpool's position?

Liverpool want to keep him. That much is clear from the fact that they have been in dialogue with his representatives for several months. Konate has been excellent when fit — his reading of the game, his aerial dominance, and his ability to step into space and carry the ball out from the back have made him one of the most complete centre-backs in the Premier League. The issue is that Liverpool cannot guarantee him what he wants in terms of contract length and wages, and the competition from clubs who can pay more freely is real.

The complication around Hugo Ekitike's Achilles injury does not help Liverpool's negotiating position. The club is looking at a summer where they need to reinvest significantly in attack, and finding funds for a new striker while simultaneously matching the wage demands of a centre-back who can leave on a free is a significant financial challenge. Something may have to give.

Who else is watching?

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain have all been mentioned in connection with Konate over the past twelve months. He fits the profile of exactly what those clubs look for in a central defender — young, physically dominant, technically reliable, with the kind of leadership qualities that suggest he will only improve with age. A free transfer would allow any of those clubs to direct what would otherwise be a substantial transfer fee into his wages instead.

Arsenal are also monitoring the situation. The Gunners have long been linked with centre-back additions, and Konate would represent a significant upgrade on what they currently have. If he can leave Liverpool for free, the financial logic is compelling regardless of which club ends up winning the race.

The bigger picture

This summer could see Liverpool lose several important players simultaneously — Salah on a free, potentially Konate on a free, and now the Ekitike injury adding pressure to the squad. Arne Slot will need a significant backing from the club's board to maintain the level that has put them in Champions League football again next season. How they navigate these departures while bringing in quality replacements will define what Liverpool look like in 2026-27.
