It is official. Bernardo Silva will leave Manchester City at the end of this season. The club confirmed it, his agent has confirmed it, and Silva himself has been open about the fact that the time has come for a new challenge. After nine years, six Premier League titles, and one Champions League, the Portuguese midfielder will walk away from the Etihad as one of the finest players in City's history — and he will do so on a free transfer, which means virtually every major club in Europe can afford to pick up the phone.
Why now?
Silva has been linked with exits from City for several summers running, most notably in 2021 and 2022 when Barcelona were heavily interested. Each time, Pep Guardiola persuaded him to stay. This time, there was no persuading. His contract expires in June, he is 31 years old and in the final chapter of his peak years, and he wants one more major adventure before the window on those kind of moves closes. City did not try particularly hard to keep him. The club is moving into a new phase, building with younger players, and letting Silva go on a free is a sensible piece of business rather than a crisis.
What it does represent is the end of a special era at the club. Silva arrived from Monaco in 2017 alongside Leroy Sané and has been one of the most consistently brilliant players Guardiola has worked with. He can play wide, he can play as an eight, he can play as a ten. His work rate is exceptional, his technical quality is elite, and he has been one of the first names on the teamsheet in the biggest matches for nearly a decade. Replacing that kind of quality and versatility is not straightforward.
Who wants him?
Barcelona have wanted Silva for years and remain the most prominent destination. The Catalan club's financial situation has improved enough that they could offer a competitive contract, and Silva has previously spoken warmly about Spanish football. Juventus are also in the picture, with reports of a three-year offer worth around €7 million net per season. Arsenal are being mentioned too — their sporting director is known to admire Silva's profile, and adding that kind of quality to the midfield would make a genuine difference to their title-challenging squad. A return to Benfica, where he began his career, is a longer shot but one that holds obvious sentimental appeal.
What City lose
Guardiola will not panic. He has managed exits of this scale before and found ways to evolve. But losing Silva while also dealing with John Stones' departure and the ongoing complications around Kevin De Bruyne's fitness means the summer rebuild is a serious undertaking. The squad that dominated English football for the better part of a decade is being dismantled piece by piece, partly through natural attrition and partly by design. The next version of Manchester City is being built in real time. It is going to be a fascinating summer.
