When Arsenal sent Ethan Nwaneri to Marseille on loan in January, the idea was that he would get game time, develop under Roberto De Zerbi, and come back ready to push for a first-team place at the Emirates. None of that went to plan. De Zerbi left the club in February — he is now at Tottenham — and the new Marseille boss, Habib Beye, has publicly criticised the teenager's attitude. Two goals and one assist in eleven appearances. Not a disaster, but not the breakthrough anyone wanted. And now Arsenal, according to multiple reports, are willing to listen to serious offers this summer.

Why Arsenal have changed their position

This is a big shift. When the loan was arranged, Arsenal's intention was always to bring Nwaneri back and let him compete for minutes. The Hale End academy product is the kind of player the club takes pride in developing — he became the youngest ever Premier League player when he came on as a sub against Brentford aged 15 in 2022, and there was a real belief internally that he had the tools to make it at this level. But the Marseille loan has gone badly enough that Arteta and sporting director Edu Gaspar are now said to have changed their stance. If someone offers around £35-40 million, they will talk.

Chelsea are watching closely — and they are not alone

Chelsea have tried to sign Nwaneri before. Reports suggest they are back in the picture, monitoring how this develops with interest. The Blues have money to spend and a pattern of targeting young English talent they believe can grow into their squad. But they are not the only ones. Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, and AC Milan have all been mentioned as interested parties — clubs willing to give a 19-year-old attacking midfielder regular football rather than a cameo role. The fact that multiple top European clubs are circling suggests the loan difficulties have not killed his reputation the way Marseille's coaching staff implied.

What happens next

The summer transfer window opens on June 15 for Premier League clubs, which means the next few weeks will be about clubs firming up their interest and Arsenal deciding exactly where their price sits. The key question is whether Nwaneri wants to stay and fight for his place at Arsenal, or whether he is ready to move on and get a proper run somewhere else. At 19, there is absolutely time to rebuild wherever he goes. Chelsea moving for him would be one of those cross-London deals that generates enormous noise. At £40 million for a teenager who is one of the most technically gifted players in his age group, it could also end up looking like a bargain in three years.

Transfer context: Ethan Nwaneri, 19, attacking midfielder. Currently on loan at Marseille (expires end of 2025-26 season). Arsenal asking price: approx. £35m-£40m. Interested clubs: Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, AC Milan. Summer window opens June 15, 2026.
