Kobbie Mainoo is set to sign a new five-year deal with Manchester United. The two parties have agreed terms on a contract running until 2031 worth around £150,000 a week — up from the roughly £20,000 he currently earns. Multiple outlets reported a verbal agreement is in place, with paperwork expected to be signed before the season ends.

It has been coming for a while. United made it clear in January that keeping Mainoo was the priority, and quiet talks have been running since then. The question was always whether his value to the club matched what he was asking for. Clearly it did.

How the season turned around

It started badly. Under Ruben Amorim, Mainoo looked uncomfortable in a system that did not suit him and was frozen out of the starting lineup for long stretches. Supporters who had adored him since his 2023 breakthrough were genuinely worried. Then Amorim left, Michael Carrick came in, and within a week Mainoo was back in the double pivot alongside Casemiro — where he has always looked most natural.

His performances since then have been good enough to kill the transfer talk stone dead. Clubs in the Bundesliga and Serie A had been watching. A couple of Spanish sides made quiet enquiries. None of that matters now.

What this means for the rebuild

United are in a difficult position right now. The squad needs investment, the manager is still finding his feet, and results have been patchy. Tying down Mainoo is one of the few genuinely good pieces of business they have done in months.

He is 20. He is English. He plays for the national team. Players like him do not become available at any price. The fact that United sorted this before his contract ran down is exactly what this ownership needed to get right. They did.

What comes next

The official announcement should come before the summer window opens. United will want it confirmed publicly to signal Mainoo is off the market, and because good news at Old Trafford has been rare enough lately that the club will want to make something of it. After the dip, the comeback, and the renewed form this season, he has earned the send-off into whatever comes next.
