Arsenal's grip on the Premier League title is tightening — but Manchester City are not done yet. Not even close.
After City beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Etihad on April 19, the gap at the top dropped to just three points. Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland were the goalscorers for the hosts, while Kai Havertz pulled one back for Arteta's side. It was a proper title six-pointer, and City won it. Now they have momentum, a game in hand, and the belief that they can run Arsenal down in the final stretch.
The numbers
Arsenal sit top with 70 points. City are second on 67 with that game in hand still to play — a midweek trip to 19th-placed Burnley. Win that, and City are level on points with five games left apiece. At that point it is anyone's title.
Opta still give Arsenal a 73% chance of winning the league, down from 94.4% just a few weeks ago. That drop tells you everything about how the race has shifted. Arsenal were running away with it. City have dragged them back.
Arsenal's remaining fixtures
Arsenal have five games left and the schedule is not straightforward. They face fixtures that will test their nerve, and the pressure of defending a lead in a tight title race is something this current group has not quite experienced at this level before. Mikel Arteta has kept his players focused, but the 2-1 defeat at City was a reminder that in the biggest games, small margins matter enormously.
For Arsenal, the challenge is simple: keep winning. Do not rely on City dropping points. Control what you can control and make it impossible for the chasing pack to catch up.
City's game in hand
The game in hand is City's greatest asset right now. A win at Burnley — which most would expect — levels the points tally and puts Guardiola's side in a position where the title is genuinely in their hands. They have been here before. They know how to win when it counts.
But Arsenal have also spent the season proving they are not going to roll over. Arteta's side have been excellent — consistent, well-organised, difficult to beat. They did not get to 70 points by accident.
The verdict
This title race is genuinely going down to the wire. After years of Arsenal falling just short, they are closer than ever to ending a two-decade wait for the league title. But City are not going quietly, and with Haaland in this form and Guardiola knowing exactly how to manage a title run-in, Arsenal will need every point they can get.
Five games. Three points. One title. This is what football is for.
