Arsenal's fairytale run in the Champions League takes them to Madrid tonight — and for the first time in years, the Gunners genuinely look like a side that could go all the way and lift the trophy in Budapest on May 30.

Mikel Arteta's men travel to the Metropolitano Stadium for the first leg of their semi-final against Atletico Madrid, with kick-off set for 9pm UK time. The atmosphere will be intense, and the stakes could not be higher — this is the biggest night in Arsenal's recent history.

Arsenal's Unbeaten European Run

What makes the Gunners' campaign so remarkable is that they have not dropped a single point throughout the entire Champions League this season. From the group stage through every knockout round, Arsenal have been relentless, disciplined, and dangerous in equal measure.

Their first encounter with Atletico this season ended in a crushing 4-0 Arsenal victory back in October during the league phase. That result gives Arteta's players real confidence going into tonight, though everyone at the club knows that Atletico at the Metropolitano is a completely different proposition.

Atletico Desperate for Glory

Diego Simeone's side head into this tie with real purpose. They sit fourth in La Liga and were beaten in last weekend's Copa del Rey final, meaning the Champions League is now their only realistic shot at silverware this season. Atletico tend to be at their most dangerous when everything is on the line.

The one blow for the hosts is the absence of midfielder Pablo Barrios, who is expected to miss around a month after picking up a thigh injury against Athletic Bilbao. His loss hurts, but Simeone is too experienced a manager to let one absence derail his team's preparation.

Path to Budapest

The winner of this tie will meet either Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final at the Puskas Arena in Budapest on May 30. For Arsenal, reaching that stage would be a defining moment for this generation of players. For Atletico, it would be a chance to finally claim the one trophy that has escaped them before.

The second leg takes place at the Emirates next week, giving Arsenal the advantage of playing in front of their own crowd for the decisive 90 minutes. But first, they must navigate what will be one of the most hostile atmospheres in European football.

Bukayo Saka will be the man to watch. If he gets space down the right, Atletico will struggle to contain him. Arsenal know exactly what they are capable of in Europe this season. Tonight, they get to prove it again.
