NEWCASTLE CLOSE TO SIGNING AC MILAN DEFENDER MALICK THIAW
Newcastle United are on the verge of completing a deal for AC Milan centre-back Malick Thiaw, with the defender set to arrive on Tyneside on Sunday night to finalise the move.
The Germany international is expected to undergo a medical before signing a contract in a transfer worth up to £34.62 million (€40 million) including add-ons.
Eddie Howe has made strengthening the heart of his defence a top priority this summer as he aims to inject youth and depth into his experienced squad. Newcastle have already seen attempts to sign targets such as Benjamin Sesko, Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, and James Trafford fall through, but Thiaw has expressed a strong desire to join the club.
Although Howe has avoided speaking directly about the 24-year-old, he has previously praised him as “a very good player” and recently hinted at a possible breakthrough in recruitment before their Premier League opener against Aston Villa next Saturday.
“Everyone here has been working extremely hard to make progress in the market,” Howe said. “Transfers aren’t easy — the right player at the right price is key — but we’re hopeful of improving the balance of the squad before the season begins.”
If completed, the signing will mark a significant step in Newcastle’s summer rebuild, giving Howe another defensive option for the campaign ahead.
