Burnley agree deal for Chelsea's Ugochukwu

BURNLEY LAND UGOCHUKWU! CLARETS AGREE PERMANENT DEAL FOR CHELSEA MIDFIELDER

Lesley Ugochukwu is set to become Burnley’s latest summer signing, with the 21-year-old midfielder expected to sign a five-year deal after being granted permission to undergo a medical at Turf Moor.

Ugochukwu, who joined Chelsea in 2023 from Rennes in a £23 million move, has struggled to establish himself at Stamford Bridge. After making 15 appearances in his debut campaign, he was loaned to Southampton last season, where he gained regular minutes in the Championship.

Now, with Chelsea streamlining their squad under new head coach Enzo Maresca, Ugochukwu has been deemed surplus to requirements and is part of a group of players training away from the first-team setup. That group — informally dubbed the “bomb squad” — includes several high-profile names such as Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell, as the club looks to offload fringe players and reduce the wage bill.

Burnley have moved quickly to capitalise on the situation, negotiating a deal that would give them a young, physically dominant midfielder with both Premier League and international youth experience. Ugochukwu is seen as a long-term piece in Burnley’s rebuild as they push to return to the top flight.

The move would mark the second Chelsea departure to Burnley this summer, following the £14 million transfer of defender Bashir Humphreys. Talks are also progressing for Armando Broja, with the Clarets hopeful of completing a third deal between the clubs before the window closes.

Ugochukwu’s imminent arrival reflects Burnley’s renewed focus on securing young, high-potential talent and offering players a platform for consistent first-team football — something the midfielder was unlikely to receive at Chelsea this season.

A formal announcement is expected once the medical is completed and contract details are finalised.
