Manchester City needed a big afternoon in the Women's Super League, and Khadija Shaw gave it to them. The striker scored her first WSL hat-trick of the season in a 5-0 win over West Ham United, which took City back to the top of the table.
Shaw answers the World XI snub
The timing made it more pointed. Shaw scored just days after she was surprisingly left off the 26-player FifPro Women's World XI shortlist, and the hat-trick extended a run in which she has scored in every league game she has started this season.
She opened the scoring in the first half, and City then ran riot after the break.
Fujino and Beney join in
Aoba Fujino and Iman Beney each scored their first league goals of the season in the second half. Beney started the match on the bench, and the starting side also included Lauren Hemp, who has combined with Shaw for 21 WSL goals.
That partnership is a big part of why City are where they are. Shaw has the finishing, Hemp has the delivery, and West Ham had few answers.
The title race tightens
City's win came on a day when title rivals Chelsea were held by Everton at Stamford Bridge, in a 1-1 draw. Chelsea failed to make their dominance count, and City made the most of it.
The standings are close enough that a single result at this stage of the campaign can change who leads, and City will go into the international break with the top spot.
