Harry Kane has signed a new contract with Bayern Munich that runs to 2029, and the news matters well beyond Bavaria. It ties England's captain and record goalscorer to the Allianz Arena through the years that will decide whether he ever catches Alan Shearer, and whether he gets two more cracks at an international trophy.
Bayern moved fast. Kane is 33, newly crowned as the Ballon d'Or winner, and other clubs had been watching his situation. The new deal expires shortly before his 36th birthday.
What Bayern have got for their money
Kane joined from Tottenham for 86 million pounds in August 2023, and the return has been startling. BBC Sport's Phil McNulty counts 102 goals in 102 Bundesliga matches, two league titles and three successive Golden Boot awards. In the 2025-26 season he scored 73 times in 65 games for club and country, which is the stretch that earned the Ballon d'Or. Bayern could not realistically have let him leave.
The honest reading is that Kane has become a more complete player than the one who left Spurs. He drops deep, links play and sees passes that most strikers never consider. Former England forward Chris Sutton told BBC Sport that Kane's finishing and football brain will not fade with age, and compared him with Teddy Sheringham, who was scoring in the Premier League in his forties.
Shearer's record looks safe
For Tottenham supporters, the sad part is that a farewell return now looks unlikely. Kane scored 280 goals in 435 appearances for Spurs and left as their record scorer. In the Premier League he got 213 goals in 320 games, which leaves him 47 short of Shearer's all-time record of 260 in 441 for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United.
To close that gap he would need a spectacular late flourish, and a new contract in Germany makes it close to impossible. McNulty's verdict is that Shearer will almost certainly remain the Premier League's highest scorer, a point that carries extra interest while Manchester City await punishment for financial breaches they deny and nobody can say what that does to Erling Haaland's chances.
The England angle
This is where Thomas Tuchel should be happiest. Kane already holds the England scoring record with 91 goals in 125 caps, and the new deal signals that Euro 2028, staged in the UK and Ireland, is firmly in his sights. The 2030 World Cup in Morocco, Portugal and Spain is a stretch, though few who know him would say never.
Sutton's point is blunt: there is nobody in the English pipeline anywhere near Kane's class. After a flat Euro 2024, when he was substituted in every knockout game and England lost the final to Spain, there was a clamour for a replacement. Now the idea is unthinkable. Bayern have their striker until 2029, and England have theirs for as long as he wants it.
