Grealish Still Out as Moyes Keeps Everton Plans Under Wraps

Jack Grealish will not play for Everton against Coventry on Friday, and nobody at Goodison Park is saying when he might return. David Moyes confirmed the news on Thursday, repeating that the on-loan Manchester City midfielder is not available while declining to give any detail about what happens next.

The reason is a breach of club discipline, which is understood to stem from an unauthorised absence from training. Everton have kept the matter close, and the club's own line earlier in the week, that Grealish was missing because of a lack of fitness, only added to the sense that there is more to say.

What Moyes has said

Asked about it before the Coventry game, Moyes said Grealish is not available and that he would not give a plan, but added that Everton will be working with him again soon. After Monday's win at Newcastle, he had said Grealish still has a future at the club, though he did not know when he would be back in the team.

The international break is the obvious moment to settle things, and Moyes was asked whether the pause might help. His answer was typically guarded: Everton just need to wait and see how things go. There is no ultimatum in that, and no hint of a fresh start either.

A loan that has stalled

Grealish is 31 and last played for Everton on 17 October, in the home defeat by Chelsea. Since then he has missed the Premier League and Carabao Cup games at Newcastle, and he has made only six appearances in this second spell at the club. The first loan was cut short by injury after 22 games and two goals.

It is a long way from the player who cost City 100 million pounds in 2021 and helped them to the Treble in 2022-23. He fell out of favour at the Etihad, and Everton was meant to be the place where he rebuilt his career. Instead, he is out of the squad again.

What it means for the next few weeks

The timing is awkward for both parties. Grealish's contract at City expires at the end of the season, so every missed game costs him a chance to show he still belongs at the top level, and it leaves Everton without a creative option in a season where Moyes has talked openly about wanting trophies.

Everton can cope in the short term, because they won at St James' Park without him. The longer this runs, though, the harder it becomes for either side to make the loan look like a success. If the break brings a clean conversation and a return in the next fixture window, the damage is small. If not, January starts to look like a decision point.

Loan context: Age 31; on loan at Everton from Manchester City; contract with City ends at the end of the 2026-27 season; last Everton appearance 17 October 2026 (home defeat by Chelsea); Everton host Coventry City on Friday 6 November 2026 at 20:00.
