Borussia Dortmund arrived in the Arctic Circle second in the Bundesliga and left with nothing. Bodo/Glimt beat them 1-0, the goal came from a centre-back, and the goalkeeper who kept it that way was given a perfect rating by supporters afterwards.
Fredrik Sjovold scored it seven minutes into the second half. Sondre Auklend got to the right touchline and pulled the ball back low, Sjovold arrived near the penalty spot and side-footed it into the bottom corner. Clean, unhurried, the sort of finish you would expect from a forward.
A very different night to the first one
Matchday one had been a 5-0 thrashing by Bayern Munich, which is the kind of scoreline that invites people to write a club off for the rest of the campaign. This was the answer. Dortmund pushed hard after falling behind and had the better of the chances in the closing half-hour, but they kept running into Nikita Haikin.
Haikin's average rating from BBC Sport users came back at 9.00, as did Sjovold's, and three of his teammates matched it. That tells you roughly how the night went in Bodo.
Home form that keeps embarrassing bigger clubs
None of this is new. Bodo/Glimt reached the Europa League semi-finals in 2024-25 and only went out to Tottenham, who went on to win it. Last season in the Champions League they beat Manchester City, Inter Milan and Sporting at home before losing in the last 16. Teams keep flying north expecting a formality and keep discovering the pitch, the cold and a side that knows exactly what it is doing on it.
Dortmund will feel they deserved a point. They will also know they had the ball in the areas they wanted it and could not finish.
Both on three points, both away next
The two clubs leave matchday two level on three points, which flatters neither and ruins neither. Next Tuesday takes them in opposite directions. Bodo/Glimt travel to Italy to play Napoli. Dortmund go to Azerbaijan to face Sabah, a trip that looks straightforward on paper and probably will not be, given how this week has gone for them.
Match facts: Bodo/Glimt 1-0 Borussia Dortmund, Champions League league phase. Scorer: Fredrik Sjovold, seven minutes into the second half, assisted by Sondre Auklend. Both sides have three points from two matches. Matchday three, next Tuesday: Napoli v Bodo/Glimt, Sabah v Dortmund.
