Lillestrom had a penalty in the second half to get back into this game. They missed it, and Real Sociedad went on to make them pay in full: a 6-0 win in Norway in the Europa League that was settled almost before the home side had found their feet.
Gomez doubles up inside three minutes
The Spanish side wasted no time. Sergio Gomez opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a left-footed shot from the left side of the box into the bottom right corner, set up by Mikel Oyarzabal. Two minutes later Gomez had his second, this time a right-footed finish from the centre of the box into the same bottom right corner, and again Oyarzabal was the provider.
That was effectively the end of the contest as a fight. The hosts had barely settled and found themselves two behind.
Sucic makes it three, then the penalty drama
Oyarzabal was not done. In the 33rd minute he laid the ball off for Luka Sucic, who hit a left-footed shot from the centre of the box into the high centre of the goal. That made three goals in eight minutes and three assists for Oyarzabal by the 33rd minute, an extraordinary return for a single player.
Lillestrom thought they had a route back in the 48th minute when Jon Martin brought down Gustav Nyheim in the box and a penalty was awarded. Thomas Lehne Olsen took it two minutes later, shooting right-footed into the centre of the goal, and Unai Marrero in the Sociedad goal saved it. The visitors had the lifeline cut before the home side could even take a breath.
Three more after the hour
After the miss the second half became a procession. Orri Oskarsson made it four in the 64th minute with a right-footed finish into the high centre of the goal, assisted by Goncalo Guedes on a fast break. Sucic then got his second in the 72nd minute, a left-footed strike from the centre of the box into the bottom right corner. Arsen Zakharyan finished the scoring in the 80th minute with a left-footed shot from outside the box into the top left corner, with Benat Turrientes providing the pass.
It was a night of rare freedom for Real Sociedad, who spread their six goals across five scorers while Lillestrom were simply overwhelmed. The Norwegian side leave with a heavy defeat and the memory of a penalty that, had it gone in, might at least have given them something to cling to.
