Real Madrid have called for the "immediate resignation" of La Liga president Javier Tebas after he compared the club's communications to the methods of Joseph Goebbels. The club described the remarks as "deeply offensive" and "morally repugnant", and the row has dragged an already toxic relationship into new territory.

What Tebas Said

In a long post on X on Friday, Tebas wrote that Real Madrid's management "directs an orchestra of mouthpieces" and that Real Madrid TV leads the singing. He said the score is always the same: pick the plays that suit the club, repeat the grievance, feed the suspicion and point fingers at enemies. That method, he wrote, "recalls propaganda mechanisms exploited by Goebbels", citing systematic repetition, the construction of an enemy and the subordination of facts to a narrative.

He later clarified that he was comparing techniques, not an ideology. Madrid rejected that explanation, saying it did nothing to lessen the "institutionally unworthy nature" of his statements.

Madrid's Response

The club said it was "absolutely intolerable and extraordinarily serious" for someone holding two positions of such responsibility in Spanish football to resort to a comparison with Nazi propaganda. Madrid demanded he step down as head of the Spanish top flight and as vice-president of the Spanish Football Association. They also called the latest remarks one more episode in what they described as repeated attacks on the club, its president and its media outlets.

A Long-Running Feud

None of this appears from nowhere. Last month Tebas criticised Real Madrid for claiming there was a refereeing conspiracy against them, a theme that has run through the club's recent complaints. In 2025 he said Madrid had "lost their head" after they sent a formal letter to the Spanish FA over officiating in the league, and he has long been at odds with president Florentino Perez, including over plans for a European Super League in 2021.

For now it is a war of statements. Whether it goes further depends on whether the Spanish FA or La Liga respond to the demand for his resignation, and no response from either had been reported at the time of writing.
