PSG Near a 2bn Euro Call on Parc des Princes or a New Home

Paris Saint-Germain have been circling the same decision for four years, and Le Parisien report that it is finally about to land. One more meeting with the three candidate cities, and the club intend to announce where they will play in future. The two options on the table could hardly be further apart: spend around two billion euros rebuilding the Parc des Princes, or leave Paris altogether.

Al-Khelaifi wants to own the building

Nasser Al-Khelaifi has spent years pressing Paris City Hall to sell the Parc outright. The club does not simply want a bigger stadium, it wants the freehold, and then a redevelopment that turns the whole area into something branded in its own colours. During the recent municipal campaign the door appeared to open a little. Then the actual price, the actual construction costs and the actual scope of the development came into view, and the picture looked rather different.

The council's line after its recent session was that talks "are moving in the right direction", which is the sort of phrase municipal authorities reach for when they have agreed on nothing in particular but do not want to be blamed for a collapse. What is being sketched is not a stadium project so much as an urban one. It runs from Porte d'Auteuil to Porte de Saint-Cloud.

Seventy thousand seats and a motorway to cover

Architects are working on a 70,000-capacity design. The complication, and the reason the bill is what it is, is that making room for it means decking over the Paris ring road to create a public esplanade on top, which would then carry the club's offices, a museum, the official store, sports facilities and the padel courts Al-Khelaifi is known to be fond of.

Add the purchase of the stadium to the construction and the surrounding development and the estimate reaches two billion euros. That is new-build money. PSG would be spending it on a ground they have played in for half a century.

Poissy and Massy are still real options

Most supporters want to stay. The Parc remains the club's stated preference, but the alternative projects in the suburban towns of Poissy and Massy have not been shelved, and PSG have been careful not to signal which way they are leaning. Both suburban sites carry their own advantages, chiefly space and cost, and their own obvious drawback, which is that PSG would no longer be playing in Paris.

The verdict probably hinges on whether the city will sell. It refused at first. Given the alternative is watching its best-known sporting institution move to the outskirts, it may yet decide that letting Qatari ownership buy the Parc is the lesser of two losses.

Club business: PSG are expected to announce their stadium decision within weeks following a final meeting with three candidate cities. Options are a renovation and purchase of the Parc des Princes taking capacity to 70,000 at an estimated total cost of two billion euros, or relocation to Poissy or Massy.
