Eighteen months ago Juventus could not get rid of Nico Gonzalez quickly enough. On Friday they tied him down until 2030. The Argentina winger has signed a new contract in Turin that runs to the end of the 2029-30 season, which is a long way from where this relationship looked to be heading when he was packed off on loan.

From loan exile to the starting XI

Gonzalez arrived in the summer of 2024 and his first year was close to a write-off. Injuries took chunks out of it, the dugout kept changing hands, and by the end of it the club were happy to let him spend 2025-26 somewhere else. He went to Atletico Madrid and, by his own account, enjoyed Spain. What he did not do was play often enough to trip the clause that would have made the move permanent.

That detail turned out to matter. Atletico wanted to keep him and tried to negotiate a deal over the summer, but the fee they put forward was well short of the 32 million euros already written into the agreement, and the two clubs never found a middle. So he went back to Turin as a player whose own club had effectively tried to sell him, which is rarely a comfortable position.

Why Spalletti needed him anyway

Luciano Spalletti's attacking options have been thinned out by injury, Kenan Yildiz among them, and Gonzalez has taken the opening. Five appearances across all competitions this season, the last three of them starts in Serie A. It is not a huge sample, but it has been enough for the club to change its mind in public.

Juventus announced the extension with a statement that read like a quiet apology for the loan. "The new contract confirms the desire to build on the journey that began in the summer of 2024 when Nico first arrived in Turin," the club said, before describing a player whose "playing style brings unpredictability and tactical options to the forward line as the Bianconeri face a busy season, combined with the experience and character that make him a valuable figurehead for the squad, both on and off the pitch."

What happens when everyone is fit

The honest test comes later. Gonzalez is 28 and his Juventus record is 45 appearances and seven goals, which is steady rather than decisive, and when Yildiz and the rest of the forward line are available again he will be competing for a shirt rather than inheriting one. A four-year deal does not guarantee him anything beyond the money.

What it does settle is the speculation. Atletico can stop circling, Juventus have removed a contract situation that would have become awkward by January, and a player who spent a year being treated as surplus now has the club's signature on a commitment that outlasts most managers. That is a reasonable autumn's work for someone who could not get on the pitch in 2024-25.

Transfer context: Nicolas Gonzalez, 28, Argentina international, joined Juventus in summer 2024 and has 45 appearances and seven goals for the club. New contract runs to the end of 2029-30. Spent 2025-26 on loan at Atletico Madrid, where he fell short of the appearance total needed to trigger a 32m euro obligation to buy.
